Irish Lore & Redcaps Explored in Script
A couple escapes their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in Irish lore the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it’s crucial to remember that there is always a dear price to pay for their aid.

Unwelcome is based on an original screenplay by Mark Stay. The film has reunited the Grabbers creature team, including prosthetics by Shaune Harrison, who has worked on some of the world’s highest-grossing blockbusters; creature designs by Paul Catling, and longtime Wright collaborator VFX supervisor Paddy Eason. The film undoubtedly falls into the ever-popular genre of creature feature horror. Maya and Jamie move to rural Ireland, thinking they’re starting a new life of tranquility and safety, only to discover malevolent creatures in their garden. Wright and Stay were inspired by films such as Gremlins and Straw Dogs.

Wright was born in Ireland and the Stay family on his mother’s side are all Irish. The two grew up surrounded by Irish stories, mythology, and legend. For the story, they researched Celtic myths as well as the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Anderson fairytales. Wright describes Unwelcome’s take on the genre as “a horror movie as well as a creature feature. It’s undoubtedly got some humor in it and has a lightness of touch…It never goes to a morbid or depressing place. As a movie, it’s always entertaining but it can also be extremely violent.”

Unwelcome Arriving on Blu-Ray & DVD on May 9th
The film has a runtime of approximately 101 minutes and is rated R for strong violence and gore, pervasive language, some drug use, and sexual material.
